We are seeking a Mechanical (Performance) Engineering student in their third year of study to undertake a 36-week placement at Stanwell Power Station.

This is an opportunity to gain firsthand experience working alongside RPEQ qualified engineers on a working coal fired power plant.  This opportunity will run from the end of semester 2 this year until the start of semester two 2026. This will be an opportunity to get develop your skills as a student whilst earning an income.

  • 36-week program for 3rd year Engineering student
  • Based at Stanwell Power Station – 20 minutes outside of Rockhampton
  • Starting end Oct/Nov 2026 – Midyear 2027

About the role

This a 36-week opportunity located at Stanwell Power Station for a student studying Mechanical Engineering.

We are looking for an enthusiastic Mechanical Engineering Student in their 3rd year of study.  This will allow you to put your university studies into practice, while under the guidance of qualified and highly experienced RPEQ engineers and subject matter experts. This is a 36-week opportunity commencing in November 2026, with a 4-day working schedule from Tuesday to Friday.  This position has potential to feed into our other early careers programs.

Key activities include

  • Developing mass and energy balance models / thermal engineering calculations to help to optimise plant performance / condition
  • Assist with reviewing plant operation strategies
  • Providing hands on assistance with mechanical project work
  • Contributing to plant or process investigations
  • Assisting Plant Engineers and non-destructive testing team during major outages; allowing you to observe and learn parts of the plant that are normally running.

About you

  • Completing your 3rd year of Mechanical Engineering study
  • Be based near the power station, or willing to relocate for the duration of the placement
  • An interest in how a coal fired power station operates and an interest to develop your knowledge
  • A passion for ongoing learning and development
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • A high level of initiative to promote our values in everything you do
  • Willingness to commit to potential future opportunities within Stanwell
