About the role

This is a full time opportunity located in Brisbane CBD. Reporting to the General Manager, Energy Trading, this senior leadership role is responsible for managing Stanwell’s participation in the National Electricity Market (NEM) and National Gas Market. You will provide strategic and operational leadership across daily bidding, plant coordination, market compliance and system readiness for a diversified portfolio, while developing a high‑performing team of traders and analysts.

This role sits at the intersection of trading strategy, plant operations and market execution, requiring confident decision‑making in time‑critical, high‑impact environments.

Key activities include:

  • Lead Stanwell’s physical market operations, including daily bids, rebids and coordination with power station operations for a diversified portfolio that includes coal, solar, wind, batteries and gas. 
  • Manage and develop a team of senior spot traders, spot traders and analysts, ensuring 24/7 operational coverage
  • Oversee compliance with the National Electricity Rules (NER), National Gas Rules (NGR), Stanwell’s AFSL and Trading Risk Management Policy
  • Provide strategic oversight of physical bidding, dispatch optimisation and ancillary service participation
  • Coordinate short‑term fuel delivery requirements to support generation forecasts
  • Drive continuous improvement in market systems, processes and operational readiness
  • Act as an escalation point during market events and high‑risk operational scenarios
  • Build strong relationships with internal stakeholders particularly the forward trading team, AEMO, regulators and industry partners
  • Manage functional budgets and contribute to broader portfolio strategy and performance outcomes

About you

You are a confident market leader with extensive experience in physical energy markets and a strong understanding of how trading decisions interact with plant operations and commercial outcomes.

You will bring:

  • Extensive experience in physical market operations
  • Strong knowledge of the NEM, market bidding, dispatch, and power station operations
  • Proven ability to make sound decisions in time‑critical, high‑pressure environments
  • Demonstrated leadership experience developing and mentoring operational teams
  • Strong analytical, stakeholder engagement and communication skills
  • Experience working with trading systems and operational IT platforms

A degree in Business, Economics, Finance, Engineering or a related discipline is desirable, however experience is the key requirement.
