The Trading Analyst / Junior Trader is responsible for assisting the trading team with the management and analysis of Stanwell’s electricity exposures arising from its assets and retail operations. An integral part of this role is growing the capability of the trading function through fundamental market and data analysis, hedging exposures, continuous improvement initiatives, trading model and tools management and maintain and regular communication across teams within the Energy Trading and Commercial Strategy division.

The Role

The Trading Analyst / Junior Trader is responsible for assisting the trading team with the management and analysis of Stanwell’s electricity exposures arising from its assets and retail operations. An integral part of this role is growing the capability of the trading function through fundamental market and data analysis, hedging exposures, continuous improvement initiatives, trading model and tools management and maintain and regular communication across teams within the Energy Trading and Commercial Strategy division.

Responsibility include but are not limited to:

  • Assisting the trading team with day-to-day analysis of the market. Continually analysing energy markets, generating ideas and formulating market driven hedging strategies that produce a risk/return benefit within the risk limits
  • Analyse data to improve our current trading strategies reporting finding to the trading team as well as researching new trading opportunities
  • Actively communicate with the senior energy trader and trading manager and execute contract strategies via the ASX, Brokers as well as direct with counterparties.
  • Prepare presentations of analysis to explain and gain approval of Stanwell’s Management. Accurate, detailed and timely reports produced. Hedging ideas presented appropriately to the intended audience.
  • Update python modelling and environments, servicing and maintaining all tools used by trading as well as building a library of trading tools in python. Be the owner of all Python based models for the trading team.

 

Located in Brisbane this is a permanent opportunity reporting into the Trading Manager – Physical Markets.

 

About you

To be successful in this role, you will have

  • Degree or equivalent in Business/Economics, Commerce, Finance, Engineering or similar discipline relevant to the operations of the electricity supply industry (essential).
  • AFMA accreditation (or working towards) with Electricity specialisation.
  • Detailed understanding of the electricity market environment and the ability to identify and assess the implications of industry changes and identify market opportunities.
  • Good understanding of financial derivative instruments and associated pricing methods as well as fundamental market modelling in electricity and related markets. 
  • Strong quantitative background to continually analyse the portfolio and market conditions to assist with the development of a robust commodity hedging strategy that is accurately reflected in the business plan.  
  • Experience and high proficiency in sourcing and analysing data to formulate pricing, hedging and business decisions.
  • Experience and proficiency in a programming language is desirable. Python, VBA and SQL is a must.
  • Demonstrated commitment to a commercial and responsible decision-making approach in an environment which has multiple variables impacting market outcomes.
